Comics In The Classroom Introduction

This page is under construction while I do research. I am very excited about this unique approach to Literacy.

As someone that has never really read comics and stays clear of comic aisles I found myself suprisingly drawn to this subject. Maybe it is Jerzy Drozd's passion, or maybe and most likely is the vision I have of watching my students create and get excited about this project. You can listen to Jerzy Drozd talk to David Lamonte at https://teachingforthefuture.com.  The podcast is in 2 parts and is titled:  COMIC ARTIST AND EDUCATOR JERZY DROZD. My idea  is still being unravelled in my head and the information here might change as I get new ideas or form new opinions of the ones on the page. I picture beginning the school year talking with the students about a comic portfolio that they will create throughout the school year not only for my class but for their english class, science class,  History class,  math class, and for Art.  All the teachers have gotten together and have learned the process of teaching their students to do this and decided on the parameters. I am sure it will take some time to get all the kinks out but I imagine it will be worth it. In English class they would be taught about writing visually and drawing narratively, how to form ideas, rough drafts, etc. In Science they would be taught how to incorporate what they will be learning into a story and apply it to the comic, In math class they will be taught how to write word problems and how to express math narratively and clearly, and of course in Art taught how to draw a comic and that as long as it progresses clearly and effectivley it is fine to draw comic boxes from right to left. (so unlike the english language). At the end of each unit of study in each class the students will complete one episode of their series. Not only will this be a fantastic learning experience for the students but also a great assessment tool for the teachers.  I would love to lead this project. I know alot more research needs to go into this on my part, but I just love this idea.

Notes and ideas:

Year long

a new episode after every unit of study

Math - word problems in the story with the problem and answer stated

Good Assessment technique

student portfolio

Science - mad scientist

Does not need to be realistic but stretches the imagination

clean no trash
